Tips for Growing Catnip: The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) recently hosted a presentation on the growing of catnip as a regional specialty crop. Leon Seidman, President of Cosmic Pet Products a wholesale manufacturer and distributor of cat products based in Hagerstown, Md (www.cosmicpet.com) addressed this alternative agricultural opportunity.>p> Catnip is a specialty crop that is very profitable on a per acre bases and has several high profit derivative products associated with it As a core product within the pet industry, Catnip yields can vary from 1,000-2,000 pounds of finished product per acre. Currently crop prices are over $1.00 per pound of non organic and over $2.75 pound per pound of organic.
